English Reading Day

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more things that you learn, the more places you will go.” – Dr. Seuss

The English Department at St. MARTIN’S SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL Madhav Nagar, Miyapur Incharge Teachers :- Mrs. N.Pratyusha, Mrs.K.BhagyaLakshmi and Mrs. Nagalalitha conducted the 26th National Reading Day on Saturday,( i.e 19 June ,2021 and ended on 26th June,2021.) Keeping in mind the spirit of books and encouraging the same amongst students, an array of competitions were organized on this day.

Further on, a number of reading activities were conducted considering the emphasis laid by the National Education Policy 2020 on ‘how to read’, ‘learn to read’, ‘read to learn’. These activities continued for a month to honor the Father of the Library Movement, the Late P.N. Panicker and realise his dream to promote the culture of reading.

Reading Day, Reading Week and Reading Month was celebrated to realise the objectives of Reading Mission 2022. It was on 19th June, 2017 when the Hon’ble Prime Minister launched the 22nd National Reading Month Celebrations and propagated the message of ‘Read and Grow’ among the citizens.

The details of the events and the activities conducted at the school level are as follow:

  1. Drop everything and Read: It is said that everything you read fills your head with new bits of information and you never know when it might come in handy. We encouraged students to read on topics that were of interest. That was our only guideline apart from them ensuring they could understand what they read. Students often reported learning something new each time they had DEAR time. These were not always what we could describe as big things but it added to the body of knowledge they were developing over the year.
  2. Poem in your Pocket: The beauty of Poem in Your Pocket is its simplicity. Students have generated many creative ways to share poems. Children create handmade pockets to tuck their favorite hand out poems.

The ideas are endless but here are a few to get you started. And, of course, we invite you to share poems on any day during National Reading Week.

  1. Vocabulary Parade: Vocabulary occupies an important position in learning to read. As a learner begins to read, reading vocabulary encountered in texts is mapped onto the oral vocabulary the learner brings to the task. That is, the reader is taught to translate the unfamiliar words in print into speech, with the expectation that the speech forms will be easier to comprehend.
  2. Elocution: Elocution is the study of formal speaking in pronunciation, grammar, style, and tone as well as the idea and practice of effective speech and its forms. It stems from the idea that while communication is symbolic, sounds are final and compelling.
  3. Become a character (Book Parade). Our reading week is also done with book parade with our other fun events. The goal is involvement and for the children to have fun reading, relevant to each, though students frequently dress as any book character they choose. It doesn’t really matter. What matters is the fun in participation and involvement.
  4. Write your own picture book. Picture books are short, narrative-driven works with an emphasis on colourful pictures that they use to tell a story. Typically intended for children, there’s a lot of variety and potential in picture books. Making a picture book of your own is a lot of work, but it can be a lot of fun if you’ve got a creative streak. And while publishing children’s books professionally is a lot harder than most people realize, there’s even some money to be made if your material is up to snuff.
